  Restoration Projects: Upper Jenkins Cove

The Hawkins family of Upper Jenkins Cove, now a portion of the community of Durrell on the northeastern shore of the island of Newfoundland, owned this fishing stage until 1950, when it was purchased by its current owner.  The stage is purportedly over 100 years old, and now one of only a few such structures left standing in Upper Jenkins Cove.

The work on Walter Hawkins Stage under the Fisheries Heritage Preservation Program included repairing the foundation cribbing, replacing the floor, installing new clapboard where needed and painting it the traditional red ochre colour.  The owner reports that he has been a "very positive reaction" to this restoration work, "especially from older people."
