Sol Curl's Twine Store

Sol Curl's Twine Store is located in the community of St. Lewis, Labrador, formerly known as Fox Harbour. The structure was built by Solomon Curl around 1942 and was used to store dry and salted cod, along with gear used in the inshore fishery. Solomon (Sol) and his wife Florence had a large family of 16 children, one of the biggest in St. Lewis at the time. Solomon was originally from the settlement of Deep Water Creek but later moved his family to Fox Harbour. The family spent their summers fishing in Fox Harbour and would relocate further up Lewis' Bay for the winter months. The entire family would be moved from one place to another by motorboat, often having to make several trips to get people and belongings between the two places.

Sol's youngest son Austin wanted to restore his father's twine store and applied to the Fisheries Heritage Preservation Program for assistance in completing the repairs. Through the course of the project, the building was made level and a new floor installed. Rotten building materials were removed and replaced with new wood, including some boards on the interior walls and some of the sills. New wooden clapboard, windows and doors were also installed. With these improvements, Sol Curl's Twine Store will continue to stand as a reminder of a culture and way of life that shaped this part of the Labrador coast.
