Ralph Pilgrim's Stage

Ralph Pilgrim's grandfather built this stage in the mid-1800s. It was used primarily for the cod fishery as a place to process fish and store gear. Cod fish were gutted and split in the stage in preparation for salting. When the fishing season would wrap up in the fall of the year, nets and fishing equipment were repaired and stored in the stage over the winter. Ralph Pilgrim started fishing in the early 1930s at the age of ten. He used the stage throughout his fishing career and continues to use it into his retirement. The building maintains its connection to the fishery as it is used as a workshop for repairing and fiberglassing boats.

The stage was renovated in the early 1980s but Mr. Pilgrim felt that it was time to again spruce up the property and applied for assistance under the Fisheries Heritage Preservation Program. Under the sponsored restoration project, Mr. Pilgrim made repairs to the foundation, put new felt and weather coating on the roof, installed new clapboard, replaced windows and doors and painted the entire stage. Mr. Pilgrim did much of the work himself, cutting down trees, sawing the wood in his own saw mill and making the window frames from scratch. His has received excellent comments on his work from people who have stopped to view and photograph the restored stage.
