  Restoration Projects: Keels

Welcher Property

Keels is one of the oldest permanently settled communities on the northeast coast of Newfoundland. Early settlers were attracted to the area because of the rich fishing grounds adjacent to the community. Irish and English settlers made a good living in this cove that was well suited for small boats. Cod, herring, salmon and lobster were numerous in the waters off Keels, and the spring seal hunt was an important supplement to fishing families.

The fisheries buildings situated close to the water's edge are a testament to Keels' past reliance on the bounty of the ocean. The Welcher Property is a good example of the type of small shed that has been used over generations to store fishing gear. Nets were also mended here and fish would be washed in the shed before being salted.

Under the Fisheries Heritage Preservation Program, the Welcher Property underwent a general facelift. New roofing felt was applied, new clapboard was installed, and repairs were made to the eaves, windows and doors.
