Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador

The Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador is a not-for-profit organization formed by the provincial government in 1984.  Its main purpose is to preserve and protect Newfoundland and Labrador’s heritage architecture.

Our province’s unique architecture is one of the most visible aspects of our heritage and culture.  From grand cathedrals and stately homes to outport saltboxes and humble fishing stages, our buildings are standing testaments to the creativity and perseverance of generations of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.

The Heritage Foundation aims to raise awareness of the importance of our heritage architecture through the designation of Registered Heritage Structures in Newfoundland and Labrador.  This process protects the structure for the future, and potentially qualifies them for restoration grants.

The Foundation’s Fisheries Heritage Preservation Program is designed to maintain and preserve our fishing stages, stores, and other fisheries-related structures.  These places are especially vulnerable to the forces of time and nature.  In the days of a declining fishing industry, it is important that they are preserved to stand as testaments to our rural way of life.

Information on all Heritage Foundation programming, restoration resources, and heritage news and events is available online at www.heritagefoundation.ca.  This includes resources about how municipalities can designate buildings, structures and lands which have heritage significance for their residents.

The Heritage Foundation’s website is also the home of the Provincial Register of Historic Places, a searchable, detailed online database where you can search communities and properties for information on the history and architectural aspects of designated sites.

The Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador also delivers the Historic Places Initiative on behalf of the Government of Canada.  This federal, provincial, and territorial collaborative program develops and supplies conservation tools and practices.  Information on this program, and the Canadian Register of Historic Places, can be found online at www.historicplaces.ca.
